End Goal: Develop a Self-Care and Mental Health Plan #
Starting a small business can be extremely stressful. In the beginning, you will likely be working extremely long hours for very little money. Remember, starting a business is investing in yourself and you are worth investing in. You need to develop a good self-care and mental health plan to make sure that you do not overwork yourself and end up hating life while starting your business.
Self-Care: #
Drink Water. Eat Healthy. Sleep regularly. Nothing will improve your business like a healthy you. So, take care of yourself. And don’t forget the little things. Get a massage, mani/pedi, or anything that you do for self-care. In the end, take care of yourself.
Take a Break: #
Long hours are the norm for small businesses. It is important to take time for yourself. Everyday, take small 10-15 minute breaks every couple hours. Walk around, scroll reddit, talk to a friend. Just take some time for you away from the work and then get back at it. Don’t overwork yourself. Many studies show that focusing on work in shorter bursts with small breaks in between result in more overall work getting done rather than just trying to hammer through everything. Be sure to also plan some real time off once in a while. You may find yourself working 7 days a week. Be sure to plan for some time off once in a while. Take a random Tuesday off to play golf or go on a long weekend with your spouse/partner.
Burnout: #
Long hours can quickly lead to burnout. If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed or burned out, do not take that lightly. If you are not 100% committed and enthusiastic your business will fail. Practice self-care, take some breaks, and get help if needed. Do not burn yourself out. Sometimes taking a break can help you go further in the end.
Support Network: #
Build yourself a strong support network separate from your business network. You need someone to complain to and it cannot be your employees. Complaints go up the ladder, not down. Find other business owners, mentors, or even friends and family to vent to once in a while. Be sure not to overwhelm them, but do find someone to talk to.
